Hummingbird School and Community Outreach
Our school and community outreach work creates opportunities for young people, educators and communities to learn about refugee experiences, migration and belonging, while challenging the stereotypes and misinformation that can shape how refugees and people seeking sanctuary are understood.
We bring the voices and experiences of young refugees to these conversations, creating space for people to ask questions, explore different perspectives and think critically about the world around them.
We work with schools, colleges, universities, community groups and other organisations across Sussex and beyond.
Through workshops, talks and events, we connect learning about migration and displacement with the human stories behind the headlines. Our approach is participatory, thoughtful and rooted in anti-oppressive practice. We create spaces where people can ask questions, have conversations and reflect on their own assumptions and experiences and use creative exercises to make learning engaging and relevant.
At a time when conversations about refugees and migration are increasingly shaped by fear, misinformation and division, creating opportunities for honest conversation and human connection matters.
We believe that when people have the opportunity to listen, learn and see beyond the headlines, they can become part of a more welcoming community.
Together, we can build a community standing together for the rights and protections of young refugees.
