Copy of Meet Becky ...

My name is Becky ...

I came to the UK from Sudan as a young person without my parents or knowing anyone, and to be honest that was really terrifying.

I didn’t know how I was going to start my life here, I had nothing but hope that everything was going to be OK.

The first place I was taken to was Essex, where I lived with other young people who became my second family. Two months later, I turned 18 and I was moved to Brighton to adult accommodation.

I felt like my world ended. I felt like I was being taken away from my family and was never going to make friends or meet people who really care about me. Turns out I was wrong.

One afternoon I met a teacher who taught English to asylum seekers. She told me about Hummingbird and introduced me to some other girls, who took me to meet the staff and members of Global Social club.

The moment I stepped into Hummingbird, I was warmly welcomed, and felt a sense of belonging. At GSC, I loved how many communities came together to make one big family. I loved how supportive everyone was. I loved that I always had a place to go to recharge.

When I had just come here, I knew nothing about the UK education system. Attending Learning Space helped me understand the education pathways and apply for college courses. I also joined the Young Women’s Group, where I learned lots of things like yoga. It brought so much healing to my soul. At GSC I trained to be a Welcome Buddy, to help new young people feel comfortable at the club.

Later when my asylum application was not successful, I fell into depression again. I also had to move to Croydon due to a fire outbreak in my hotel, and I missed college, which made things worse.

But Hummingbird was there for me even when I called and cried, they listened and reminded me my emotions were valid without judging me. The Support Workers helped me with my accommodation and my finances. There was always someone to talk to.

Now I am back and everything is falling into place. Without Hummingbird, I would’ve lost my mind on the way. I’m really grateful to have them in my life. They’re patient and encouraging, and they help us believe in ourselves more.

Through their programmes, I have learned leadership skills, and now I can run for president, just kidding… maybe in the future. I’m truly grateful to everyone at Hummingbird who’s taken their time to be there for us. Thank you for having us at heart.
